We are starting a Critique Series

written by Dave Merwin
Friday, June 3, 2005

Stephen Hallgren and I will be starting a new series next week. We will be trading of critiquing examples of sites that we feel are good and bad. We will try to offer one or two solid examples from each site and how you can learn from them.

I would like to say from the outset that our goal is NOT to humiliate anyone. As designers and developers we all have little chinks in our amour about what we do not do well. No one is perfect.

What we will be doing is offering honest criticism of mistakes as well as good solutions.

Some time ago, I learned the hard way that in order to do anything with excellence I needed to be part of a team. We will be encouraging you to join our team in an effort to facilitate your communication of the Gospel.

You should expect the first 2 critiques on Thursday of next week.

  1. I’m looking forward to this series!

Feel free to critique our site. We know it can be better and we love feedback.

We’re a five month old church plant. Being good GenXers, we had a website before we had a telephone number for the church!

Many of our visitors have found us because of the site…even in rural Central Maine!

  2. Hey, if you will, review my latest ministry site.

You can read about how I designed it here,

Good, bad and the ugly. Thanks.

  3. Curiosity - are you contacting the web sites directly and/or determining if it was designed in house vs. using a design firm? The reason I ask is that we used a Christian-based design firm in the Austin area that we really liked, and would like to ensure that your review gets to them for encouragement and potential improvements.

    Thanks.

  4. That is a good point James. We did not ask them whether their designs were in-house or from a design firm. While I don’t know who did the High Point Church website, the Mars Hill website was done by a design company called Duel.
