Do We Even Need a Website?

One thing that I do not hear discussed is the reasons why you even need a website. In my consulting work, I will frequently ask if the client is sure that they need a website. If they do not know, then I ask them to reconsider. I ask them to go back and figure out if this is actually part of their business plan or is it merely a hot idea. I often receive surprised looks as they think about the question.
Knowing why you need a website, really knowing, not just guessing, can make or break your project. You need to be able to express why on paper and in person. You need to be able to share your vision clearly. You need to take ownership of what you are doing.
Taking ownership will mean that you are committed to the project. It will help you identify what is missing and what needs to be forgotten. Owning the project, before you even enlist help, will allow you to walk confidently as your site is being built.
If you don’t know why, how will you know if what you have is serving the purpose that you are guessing at? How will you know if the help you have enlisted is doing a good job? How will you know if it is doing harm or good? How can you direct people responsibly?
Do you really need a website? Are you sure? If yes, do not hold back. Do what ever it takes to release an important site. If no, don’t waste your time.
