Equipping our Children

Today’s papers are full of examples of the digital divide. The divide between those that can afford a computer and those that cannot. Even as the price of machines comes down, it seems that those that might benefit from learning via a computer are still unable to afford one.

I would love to see some large churches sponsor some smaller urban or rural churches that might not be able to afford computers and software. These churches could contact and partner with the smaller churches to provide them with technology solutions like a computer lab.

For $8k to $10k you could setup a descent lab that would help those that might not have the opportunity otherwise to learn basic and complex computing skills. It would not really be that hard.

  1. There is a computer lab set up like that in Little Rock, AR (where I live). I worked there for a short time. It was started by the Arkansas Small Business Development Center, funded by many groups including the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and supported by the City of LIttle Rock. It was set up in an urban area for the lower income families to use as a base for job hunting, building resumes, school research, etc.

I know its not a church related idea, but you idea is along the same lines. I agree that it would be cool to see churches getting involved in this way in the community. As I worked there more children came in than adults, and more often than not it was to play online games or look at pornography (both of which were restricted). I did see a handful of people using it as inteded.

One guy who got out of prison, just devoted his life to Christ spent his time there taking online classes for some school and looking for jobs.
