Pump Up The Volume

Tonight I went back. Way back. Back to 1990 and a film called Pump Up the Volume. A friend bought it for me after hearing me talk about how good that movie was back in the day.

It is about a lonely new student who transfers into a “good” school in Arizona form New York. He is lonely, frustrated, and, unlike his peers, empowered. He owns a short wave radio and is broadcasting to his home every night at 10PM.

Rude, crass, and completely offensive, he resonates with he fellow students. He begins to challenge the status quo and some real changes start happening. It is a great teen angst movie.

What was the most interesting thing to me was the end. I won’t give it away, but in the end he gives a monologue. In part of it he encourages his listeners to steal the air and use it. Get the message out.

Using technology to broadcast common frustrations, joys, and questions. Being human through an unregulated medium.

Hmmm. Sounds a lot like blogging.

15 years later, we now have the means to “steal” the air. The technology is everywhere. Free blogging tools like blogger make it SO easy to tell a story. Why not make it the most important story ever.
