Free Software Group

We have started a new group at Ma.Gnolia. It is called the Free Software Group. Have you ever tried to get your pastor or any non geek to use Freshmeat or Sourceforge? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

At a Noah Institute meeting this morning we were discussing how to show people what free software was available on the web. How do we talk about it and how do we rate it with out getting overly geeky?

Ma.Gnolia! Make a group that allows people to bookmark sites, tag them, review them, and rate them. Within an hour we had 5 new members and 16 resources.

You might ask, why didn’t we just do it in del.icio.us? It comes back to the geek factor. Del.icio,us, while powerful and amazing, is just a little geeky. Ma.Gnolia is just as geeky, but the user interface is a tad easier. I know, it is a moving target. What is geeky really? By the way, we will be duplicating the idea in del.icio.us.

So Join us at the Free Software Group. Add your web aps, desktop aps, and mobile aps. Give them a rating and a description. Contribute and help the church! Please, no games. We can’t be having any fun can we? ;-)

  1. Does anyone else see the irony in using Ma.Gnolia, a geek’s paradise, to promote the usage of more geek software? Just thought I’d point that out in case anyone missed it.

On a more serious note, that’s a great idea. Hopefully churches will see that price does not have to be a point of worry when it comes to good, high quality software. I wonder how many churches know about OpenOffice…

Does anyone know of any churches that only use OpenOffice? Now I’d call that church cutting edge.
